Bath's Beautiful Prior Park

High up in the hills above Bath in Somerset, well away from the town’s tourist-thronged centre, you’ll find the peaceful Prior Park which has commanding views of the town below.

Part of the National Trust, Prior Park used to form the grounds of the 18th century palladian mansion which sits above it, however that building is now a Catholic boarding school. Amongst the interesting features you’ll find in the grounds are the remnants of a shell-filled grotto, the ‘cabinet’ (an open space below the grand house where the master of the house and guests would gather to discuss the issues of the day - from which the British Government’s ‘cabinet’ gets its name) and a beautiful bridge that crosses an artificial waterway at the bottom of the estate.

If you happen to find yourself in Bath and have had your fill of Roman ruins, Prior Park would make for an interesting visit - just make sure that you bring your walking boots! The other photographs from my trip can be found online here.

This is Henry - Henry is hiring himself out - he’s the helper in ‘Win A London Helper For The Day’, a competition by London Living (the guys behind the new East Village in Stratford - what is now the Olympics Athletes Village and which will become a new area of London with over 2000 homes and other community facilities when the games depart).

Apparently Henry is prepared to do almost anything - according to the press release: Need someone to pick up your shopping, paint your spare room, weed your garden or file your papers? Our London Helper is up for grabs. The best answer to our question will win you Henry for a day next week, who will perform whatever tasks you desire (within reason please, Londoners!).

All you need to do to ‘win’ Henry is to enter their competition here by providing an answer in the comments section to the question “What would you do with your day if you had more time?”

One of the long exposure shots that I took last night, this one featuring London’s Somerset House right on the River Thames. I love the way that 30 second exposures gives moving water a really interesting texture and amplifies the reflections. You can see the other photos in the series here.

One of the birds they use for displays at Warwick Castle - a bald eagle if I’m not mistaken. It’s just unfortunate that they feel the need to tame these magnificent birds in order to please the crowds - I would have enjoyed some genuine falconry displays with actual peregrine falcons… but then the whole place is a medieval amusement park these days.

This is incredible - a full-length version of Star Wars Episode IV cut together from fragments of hundreds of fan videos. I can’t imagine how many weeks and months it took to do this - breathtaking!

It’s also interesting that it hasn’t been taken down - that probably means that it has the unofficial George Lucas seal of approval…

One of London’s iconic Routemaster buses, some of which are still in use on ‘Heritage’ routes which travel across Central London. The nice thing about these buses is that there’s no additional charge - they’re part of the normal transport network, unlike the ‘tour buses’ that operate in the city.
